global connectivity\u00a0 made possible by international air service at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).\u00a0 Houston\u2019s flagship airport facility connects the city to almost 70 individual airports located across the globe and standing at the epicenter of this vital international operation is the Mickey Leland Terminal Building at IAH, otherwise known as \u201cTerminal D.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"itemFullText\">\n<p>On April 24, 2014, Houston Aviation Director Mario Diaz presented members of Houston&#8217;s City Council with a dramatic new vision of the Mickey Leland International Terminal building (Terminal D) at George Bush Intercontinental Airport.\u00a0 The plan calls for the construction of a completely new gateway terminal facility, on the same site as the existing Terminal D building.<\/p>\n<p>Terminal D serves as the primary global gateway facility for air travelers in the Houston region but unfortunately, it does not adequately reflect Houston\u2019s current standing as a world leader in business and quality of life offered to its residents.\u00a0 It is with this reality in mind, that leaders with the Houston Airport System are moving forward with a dramatic and detailed plan to completely overhaul the Terminal D building at IAH.\u00a0 The existing structure will remain operational throughout the renovation project, but the end result will be a thorough list of aesthetic and operational changes that impact virtually every corner of the terminal building.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Outreach:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In an effort to maximize community participation and pre-planning efficiency, HAS team members held a \u201cTerminal D Industry Day\u201d on March 13, 2014.\u00a0 At this meeting, various representatives from the construction industry were given a detailed briefing on the plans to move forward with the Terminal D project.\u00a0 Information passed along at this meeting included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Overview of Terminal B North project (explanation that this is a United Airlines project)<\/li>\n<li>General phasing plans for project<\/li>\n<li>Explanation of key design aspects (emphasis on lighting, \u201csense of place,\u201d etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Discussion of funding\/management mechanisms<\/li>\n<li>Timeline for program launch and
